Agri-environmental support

9) Agri-environmental support will be reformed to promote the conservation of bodies of water and biodiversity more efficiently than at present. Agri-environmental support measures will be focused regionally and on certain farms and parcels, in the areas considered most sensitive in terms of water protection and biodiversity.

Responsible institutions: Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, Ministry of the Environment

Schedule: 2013

Status in 2018: The principles for agri-environmental support have been outlined in the Rural Development Programme for Mainland Finland 2014-2020 (the Rural Programme for short). In the Rural Programme, environmental issues are promoted both through area-based actions and through investments and projects. Area-based actions include the environmental support for promoting sustainable agriculture, which is allocated regionally and parcel-specifically, and the compensations for organic farming. Environmental investments are aimed at projects improving the sustainability of production and for non-productive purposes.

The educational and communicational programmes of the Rural Programme raise environmental awareness and competence. Water protection in coastal regions administered by the ELY centres is supported through project-based funds. Regional development projects, which are implemented in accordance with the principles of the LEADER programme, involve rural inhabitants in the work to improve the state of the environment.
