Responsible institutions: Ministry of the Environment, Ministry of Finance
Schedule: 2013–2020

Status in 2018: The Business & Biodiversity project has been going on for five years, during which the FIBS corporate responsibility network and the Finnish Environment Institute have educated 50 corporations and other actors as a part of their Natural Capital Educational Programme. A national working group proposed to extend this network, the main goal being to further increase the awareness of biodiversity among corporations.

The building industry has established its own sector-specific working group on biodiversity. In the past few years, Finnish corporations have received numerous international awards for acknowledging biodiversity in their respective sectors.
In 2016, biodiversity was listed as one of the criteria in the Responsibility Contest for Finnish Corporations organised by the FIBS corporate responsibility network. In the same year, the first Biodiversity Prize for Corporations was awarded to Senate Properties. Finland has actively participated in the Business & Biodiversity project of the EU, and the Global Partnership Programme of the Convention on Biological Diversity.

By the end of 2018, two projects funded by the Government’s Analysis, Assessment and Research Activities were finalised: one identified innovative funding possibilities to promote nature-based solutions and the other developed new economic instruments for steering ecological compensations.
