Digitisation of taxonomic data

43) Continue the digitisation of the Finnish Museum of Natural History’s taxonomic data and of key materials of regional museums and collections, and the production of checklists promoting the conservation of species. Operators will agree between themselves on the updating of species checklists, resources and digital exchange. Enhance the joint use of datasets on the Internet, by promoting the implementation of the objectives of the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) in Finland.

Responsible institutions: Ministry of Education and Culture, Ministry of the Environment

Schedule: 2013–2020

Status in 2018: In 2015–2017, the Finnish Academy awarded research infrastructure funding to the Finnish Biodiversity Information Facility, which included the digitisation of the collection of the Finnish Museum of Natural History and the Universities of Turku, Oulu, and Eastern Finland. In addition, the institutions have allocated their core funding to the digitisation. Approximately 15% of the Finnish collections have been digitised. The institutions have the equipment and personnel required for the digitisations, and the remaining part of the collections will be digitised within the following 50 years. Because of the limit of human resources, the current utilisation rate of the digitisation equipment is 50%. The Finnish Museum of Natural History coordinates the EU-funded ICEDIG project (2018–2020), which develops faster digitisation methods.

The Finnish Museum of Natural History coordinates the gathering of species lists. The species list of the Finnish Biodiversity Information Facility covers now 90% of known Finnish species, except for unicellular organisms. The Finnish Biodiversity Information Facility disseminates freely the 30 million observations of species from 173 Finnish datasets in the portal Laji.fi and the global GBIF portal.
