Ecosystem services

39) Identify and assess the status of ecosystems and ecosystem services in Finland, in line with the EU biodiversity strategy.

Responsible institutions: Ministry of the Environment, Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry

Schedule: 2013–214

Status in 2018:  The national assessment of the Economics of Ecosystem Services and Biodiversity (TEEB for Finland) was conducted in 2013–2014. The project generated a preliminary assessment of the current and future state of the most important ecosystem services in Finland and their significance for improving green economy. In addition, the project identified the required actions for the future.

As a part of the project Finnish Indicators of Ecosystem Services running in 2012–2014, a reference framework was generated for the measurement and monitoring of the 28 most important ecosystem services. In 2015 and 2016, the indicators were transferred to the webpage, but since then there has not been resources for developing them further.

Finland has participated in the European project Mapping and Assessment of Ecosystems and their Services (MAES). The aim is to generate analyses on the geographical variability of ecosystem services, and thus assess the importance of different regions for ecosystem services. The development of remote sensing technologies has been essential in the mapping of ecosystem services.

Mapping of ecosystem services has been conducted at the regional, municipal and city levels. Some thematic mappings have been conducted also at the national level, such as the valuing of recreational ecosystem services in Finland.
