Urban areas

Finland’s Biodiversity Action Plan comprises two actions for urban areas (actions 80 and 81). At the ned of 2018, they were both considered to be proceeding according to schedule.

The extensive action of considering urban biodiversity in land use planning directs municipalities to survey biodiverse and urban areas and to preserve green infrastructure. This has proceeded through guidelines on land use planning, the METSO Programme and new land use planning methods. The new national land use objectives oblige to preserve ecological connections. A total renewal of the Land Use and Building Act is being prepared (action 80; on track to completion).

During the action plan period starting in 2013, four new national urban parks have been founded while three additional parks are being prepared. The aim of national urban parks is to preserve both urban nature and built cultural heritage (action 81; on track to completion ).
