Benefit: Source of knowledge
Many research fields apply biological elements or processes in their studies. Biomimetics means imitating natural structures, functions or systems in order to create more efficient and practical solutions. The results can be applied widely, for example in development of nanotechnology, medicine or different sorts of building materials.
Nature is also a source of knowledge itself and the research of species and natural processes is considered important in Finland. Through research the interdependences of different environmental factors, circumstances, species and processes are uncovered and help us to better understand the consequences of our actions. It will also help encountering the future threats such as the climate warming, predicting its various impacts on natural systems, finding ways of adjusting to them, and, in the best case, preventing deterioration of Finnish ecosystems.
