Seal populations on the rise

13.04.2017

The numbers of Grey Seals have increased both in the whole Baltic Sea and in Finnish territorial waters. The population increase of the Ringed Seal is limited to the Bothnian Bay.

The newly updated indicator BS9 Seals tells a strory of the rebound seal populations in the Baltic Sea. The rebound is due to a decrease both in hunting pressure as well as in environmental toxin levels. Climate change has, however, emerged as a new threat to the southern subpopulations of the Ringed Seal that occur in the Gulf of Riga, eastern parts of the Gulf of Finland and in the Archipelago Sea.
