Alpine areas are restricted to middle and north boreal vegetation zones. The share of protected alpine areas of all alpine areas is high in Finland. This is true especially in the north boreal vegetation zone, where almost 90% of all alpine areas are protected to some degree. Most of these areas are not actual nature reserves but wilderness areas established by the state to conserve the wilderness-like nature of northern Lapland. Alpine areas cover only a fraction of the middle boreal vegetation zone when compared to those in the north boreal zone. About 40% of these areas are nevertheless protected. On strictly protected areas forestry and all other actions which would have a significant impact on the pristine nature of these areas, are prohibited. In the north boreal vegetation zone, where most alpine areas are located, about 21% of all alpine areas are protected. | |
